I believe in dance...

I Believe in Dance
I believe in dance because when dancing a personality is expressed that you might not see normally. I believe it is a way to escape into a whole different world to find your happy place. Dance clears your mind of all other emotions you might feel in your life. I believe as a dancer you can lose yourself in the music and the movement. “The truest expression of people is in its dances and its music. Bodies never lie” (Maleah Diggs). Dance is my therapy, my getaway, my happiness.
Often when you ask a dancer why they dance they reply with some sort of comment along the lines of ‘why do you breathe’ or ‘it is my life’. There is only one way we can truly connect the idea that ‘dance is life’, the instrument through which the dance speaks is also the instrument through which life is lived: the human body. It is the instrument by which all the primary experiences of life are manifested. It holds in its memory all matters of life and death, joy and pain, and hate and love.
Dance is like magic and when watching a really good piece you feel an magical happiness that can’t be felt while watching anything else. You are forced to think of the art that is behind it, the time spent to perfect it, and the effortless look it has to it. “I believe it is in my nature to dance by virtue of the beat of my heart, the pulse of my blood and the music in my mind. So I dance daily.” (Robert Fulghum) I dance for at least five hours a night and through that I am able to forget the stresses of the world. I am able to express every emotion through the art of dance and that’s what makes me love it so much.
The magic of dance is something that is created because dancers train like athletes, tell a story like actors, hear music like musicians, and create a picture like artists. Dancers train up to six hours a day all year round, there is no off season for a dancer; they are constantly working to improve themselves. Behind every piece there is a story and a meaning for the dance, therefore it is the dancer’s job to put this story to life and tell it through the moves they are doing. As a dancer you move to the music, the music is your guide. Dances without amazing musicality lose the creativity and the meaning of the piece. Lastly dancers create a masterpiece using their bodies to create shapes and lines. “Dancing is an art. The floor is my canvas. And I am the brush. And whatever I create comes from the heart.” (Unknown)

Dance is like an illusion. Those may not see the picture the dancer is trying to portray, but dance has the ability to propose many different perspectives within one dance. “The dance is a poem of which each movement is a word” (Mata Hari). Like poems, dances may have different interpretations but each one has a sentimental value and depth. I believe in the depth of the dance.
